Mayorkun Solidifies His Reign with New Album, Still The Mayor
Mayorkun Cements His Legacy with Third Album Still The Mayor
Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Mayorkun has unveiled his highly anticipated third studio album, Still The Mayor—a dynamic 12-track project that solidifies his position as a leading force in the genre. Since his 2016 breakout single Eleko, which earned him the moniker “Mayor of Lagos,” Mayorkun has consistently delivered chart-topping hits. His latest effort showcases a refined yet daring evolution, blending his trademark charisma with deeper introspection and innovative production, proving he remains a key player in shaping Afrobeats’ future.
Arriving four years after his sophomore album Back In Office (2021) and following his 2023 EP Love.. For Free, Still The Mayor reflects Mayorkun’s meticulous craftsmanship. Originally slated for a May 2 release, the delayed drop allowed for fine-tuning, resulting in a project that feels both intimate and expansive. Boasting eight high-profile collaborations—including Davido, Fireboy DML (on two tracks), Rotimi, King Promise, Olivetheboy, Dremo, The Flowolf, and Michii—the album is a star-studded affair, with each feature enhancing Mayorkun’s vibrant sonic landscape.
From the outset, Still The Mayor demonstrates its versatility. The lead single Innocent, featuring Fireboy DML, is a melodic standout, blending Mayorkun’s smooth vocals with Fireboy’s soulful delivery as they reflect on growth and redemption. The Amapiano-driven Reason 2 Japa, the second single, tackles Nigeria’s emigration crisis with sharp, relatable lyricism. Tracks like Blessings on Blessings (with Davido) and Diamonds (with Fireboy) highlight Mayorkun’s knack for infectious hooks, while Konko Below delivers gritty street energy. Meanwhile, Hold Body (featuring King Promise) slows the tempo with a seductive R&B groove, perfect for late-night vibes.
Production-wise, the album is a testament to Afrobeats’ ever-evolving sound, seamlessly fusing traditional rhythms with Afropop, R&B, and rap influences. Collaborators like Speroach Beatz and Clemzy provide polished, multi-layered beats that complement Mayorkun’s vocal versatility. Tracks such as Industry Girl (Interlude)—a lively posse cut with The Flowolf, Dremo, and Michii—highlight his ability to curate high-energy anthems without sacrificing cohesion.
Lyrically, Mayorkun strikes a balance between confidence and vulnerability. On *Reason 2 Japa*, he addresses Nigeria’s systemic struggles with lines like, “I’m chasing dreams, but the system’s a cage,” yet balances the weight with playful bravado on tracks like *Diamonds* (*“My shine too bright, e dey blind them”*). This duality—mixing social commentary with irresistible charm—is what makes him a standout artist.
While the album excels, it isn’t without minor flaws. The opening track’s high-energy intensity may feel abrupt to some listeners, and while the star-powered features add excitement, a few moments (like *Industry Girl*) prioritize viral appeal over seamless flow. Still, these are small critiques in an otherwise stellar project.
Mayorkun’s rise—from a banker sharing covers online to an Afrobeats heavyweight—is a testament to his talent and hustle. The Mayor of Lagos (2018) announced his arrival, Back In Office (2021) confirmed his staying power, and now Still The Mayor cements his legacy. With a glitzy Accra listening party and an upcoming African tour, Mayorkun isn’t just celebrating his success—he’s proving his reign is only just beginning.
Still The Mayor isn’t merely an album; it’s a bold statement that Mayorkun remains at the top of his game.
