M.I Abaga looks back on his previous political choices
Veteran Nigerian rapper Jude Abaga, better known as M.I Abaga, has publicly admitted regretting his past endorsement of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 elections.
During a recent appearance on the Menism podcast, the celebrated ‘African Rapper No 1’ explained that his support for the APC back then stemmed from frustration with the alleged corruption under the then-ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
“Yes, I backed APC because, at the time, I believed the PDP government was deeply corrupt. I was among those who spoke up, demanding change and democracy,” M.I revealed.
The rapper recounted facing criticism in subsequent years, especially after speaking out against the herdsmen attacks in Benue State. Many Nigerians, he said, called him out for his earlier political stance, holding him partly responsible for the country’s present struggles.
Looking back, M.I acknowledged his misjudgment, stating that the APC no longer aligns with the ideals that initially drew him to the party.
“As humans, we try to do what’s right, but sometimes we get it wrong. Sadly, the APC today isn’t the party I once believed in,” he said.
Now, M.I has shifted his focus from politics to nation-building through music, activism, and youth empowerment. He stressed the importance of leveraging his influence to drive positive change, demand accountability from leaders, and support initiatives that empower young Nigerians.
