BNXN Opens Up About Afrobeats, Creative Growth, and Upcoming Album CAPTAIN in Grammys Interview
In a recent interview with the Recording Academy (Grammys), Nigerian singer-songwriter BNXN shared his thoughts on the global rise of Afrobeats, his artistic evolution, and what fans can anticipate from his eagerly awaited album, CAPTAIN.
The Finesse hitmaker reflected on the genre’s explosive growth, acknowledging the contributions of artists like Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Asake in pushing Afrobeats onto the world stage. He also highlighted the genre’s expanding versatility, pointing to Tems’ seamless fusion of R&B with Nigerian sounds as a prime example.
“Afrobeats has been doing super amazing,” BNXN said. “But Tems is a great export because she’s been able to bridge R&B with Nigerian beats. Songs like Love Me JeJe are proper fusion.”
When discussing his own aspirations, BNXN expressed confidence in his artistry but admitted he prefers to let his work speak for itself. “I feel like I am one of the best, I just don’t know how to blow that trumpet,” he remarked.
The conversation also delved into hip-hop’s impact on his music, particularly in shaping CAPTAIN. He cited Burna Boy’s electrifying presence on tracks like City Boy as a key inspiration for experimenting with new sounds.
“Hip-hop used to be very core in Nigeria, and I love Burna Boy so much. His energy inspired me to experiment, and that spirit is part of , BNXN shared.
The album’s title holds personal significance—originally a nickname from close friends, CAPTAIN has since become a symbol of resilience and leadership in the music industry. “I see myself as this pirate, a captain on a ship navigating the ocean of the music industry,”* he explained.
Promising a dynamic mix of Afrobeats, hip-hop influences, and introspective storytelling, CAPTAIN is set to showcase BNXN’s growth as an artist while reflecting the ever-evolving landscape of Nigerian music.
