Pelumi Nubi’s Iconic London to Lagos Solo drive

On January 30, 2024, Pelumi Nubi, a spirited 29-year-old travel content creator and blogger,

embarked on an extraordinary journey that would etch her name in the annals of history.

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, but a resident of London since the age of 10, Pelumi’s thirst for adventure and her unwavering determination

led her to undertake a monumental feat, a London to Lagos solo drive, becoming the first black woman to achieve this remarkable milestone.

Pelumi’s passion for exploring the world and her refusal to conform to conventional norms

fueled her decision to chronicle her travel escapades and also set up her venture, “Oremi Travels.”

Her desire to craft a life aligned with her dreams and aspirations pushed her beyond boundaries

both geographical and societal, as she embarked on this audacious solo road trip spanning continents and cultures.

Over the course of 68 days, Pelumi Nubi traversed through 17 countries and 3 continents, encountering a myriad of challenges

ranging from multiple breakdowns to a harrowing car crash, all while navigating through border restrictions and unfamiliar terrain.

Her resilience and indomitable spirit shone through as she conquered each obstacle with unwavering resolve.

In an interview with CNN, Pelumi recounted her awe-inspiring journey

reflecting on the breathtaking landscapes she encountered and the profound sense of solitude she experienced

amidst the vast expanse of unfamiliar territories. “It’s been an incredible adventure, filled with beautiful surprises,” she shared,

acknowledging the occasional pangs of loneliness amidst the thrill of exploration.

Accompanied by her loyal companion, “Lumi the car,” her beloved purple Peugeot 107,

Pelumi embraced the challenges of the journey with grace and determination.

Despite considering the option of acquiring a new vehicle for the expedition, she opted to entrust her faithful car with the task of

equipping it with custom modifications, including a bed and a kitchen facility

to ensure comfort and functionality throughout the arduous 10,000-kilometer odyssey.

The pinnacle of Pelumi’s journey culminated in a jubilant reception upon her arrival in Lagos, Nigeria.

Driving into the University of Lagos campus on the 7th of April, she was greeted with exuberant celebrations

orchestrated by students and well-wishers, symbolizing the collective admiration and pride of her compatriots.

Among the distinguished guests present at her reception were trailblazers like Dr. Newton Jibunoh,

the first Nigerian to undertake the London-to-Nigeria drive 56 years ago

and Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, who lauded Pelumi’s historic achievement

as a testament to the “Can-do spirit” embodied by Nigerian youth.
