Today, the Super Eagles had their first training ahead of Saturday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Benin in Uyo.
One of caretaker coach assistants, Daniel Ogumodede, from NPFL club Remo Stars, who took the 20 players present on mainly recovery training.
Stand-in captain William Ekong, Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Stanley Nwabali, Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina, Samuel Chukwueze, Alhassan Yusuf and Alex Iwobi were among the players who trained from 4.30pm local time.
Benjamin Tanimu was a late replacement for injured Fenerbache defender Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Only three players are still expected – Kelechi Iheancho from La Liga club Sevilla, Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and Victor Osimhen, who will conclude his transfer to Turkish giants Galatasaray before he flies out to Nigeria.
It was an open training, which meant the public and media were allowed in.
However, officials told SCORENigeria tomorrow’s workout will be behind closed doors as Eguavoen rolls out his game plan to beat 2026 World Cup qualifying rivals Benin and former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr.
Incidentally, Eguavoen replaced Rohr in 2021, when the Franco-German was sacked after qualifying Nigeria to the delayed 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.
